| For those of you who don't know, folding@home is a program which you can download to help with medical research. It will use your computer's extra processing cycles to calculate the folding of proteins then send the results to the main server. In this way it uses millions of computers to calculate much faster than a supercomputer could. Because it only uses the free processing cycles there should be no noticeable slow down with your computer, it simply won't calculate anything if your using 100% of your cpu.
QUOTE: What is protein folding and how is folding linked to disease?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out these important functions, they assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, in many ways remains a mystery.
Moreover, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious consequences, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, Huntington's, Parkinson's disease, and many Cancers and cancer-related syndromes.
To help out you can just download folding@home from their official download page and run it on your computer. All the work units your computer finishes will be attributed to the username of your choice, so people can see how much you have helped. You can even join a team and work to beat the other teams, if anybody here wants to join a team; I have one. You can see my current team rating at: this page. And join by entering my team number (125561) in your f@h settings. Joining a team doesn't hurt your user-score, it just also applies your points to that team.
